Cross Knot Kolsch

KOLSCHThe Green Beacon team are a well travelled bunch and what they all found incredible and exciting in their favourite cities like New York and London, was the communities’ accessibility to all sorts of wonderful restaurants, coffee shops, roasters, bars and even the odd local small craft brewer. The team were intrigued by it and saw how well these establishments functioned within these communities and decided this was a perfect formula for their ever changing and forward looking home town of Brisbane.

Green Beacon is attempting to bring a new culture to beer, so prevalent abroad but only just gaining ground in Australia, that beer can be a product of huge flavour and depth, crafted specifically to be paired with different foods and indulge the senses. As the good beer guide to Australia suggests: with beer we encourage everyone to drink widely and drink well; drink less but drink better!

Style: Kolsch             ABV: 4.6%

Tasting notes from the brewer: Cross Knot Kolsch is a German style golden ale with clean, crisp flavours, restrained bitterness and a dry finish. An extended conditioning period and cool ferment yields a beer of refreshing subtlety.

"Meh."

To be fair to Green Beacon, this may well be a good example of the style but I just can’t dig it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with it per se and if I was at a party or a mate’s place I’d happily down a couple – I just don’t find it at all memorable or exciting. The light straw-colour and slightly sour wheatiness just doesn’t do it for me.

Would I buy it again?
Probably not.

"Not the brew for me."

After enjoying the American Wheat beer from the same brewery I looked forward to getting stuck into this one but unfortunately it just didn’t live up to the high expectations I gave it. After spending a bit of time trying to think of a word to describe the taste all I could think of is unique. It wasn’t overly bitter or a strong after taste but it just didn’t suit my palate.

Would I buy it again?
If it was free I wouldn’t pass it up but I can’t see myself forking out my hard earned (yes, I know I spent the last hour of work drinking beer) for it.

"Dry and Crispy."

Poured a nice golden hue with a decent head and a nice citrus aroma. It’s an easy beer to drink and would be quite sessionable for kolsch drinkers. The beer lacked in any punchy flavour to suit my own personal tastebuds and the slightly sour finish left me a little deflated. In saying that, it’s light and refreshing and I reckon it’d be the perfect accompaniment to fish and chips or some fancier seafood delights.

Would I buy it again?
Probably not. Kolsch style beers are never front of mind though.

“A beacon of hope.”

The Cross Knot kolsch from Green Beacon is very easy to drink. It’s incredibly light and has a very pared back flavour... but not to the point of being insipid. Oddly, the company describes it as a modern, bright ale but I would say it’s more of a lager. What’s bugging me though is that it tastes identical to another beer I’ve had – I just can’t remember which. Then again, maybe that’s why I like it so much? Perhaps it triggers a familiarity in me that makes it so enjoyable. It really is an inoffensive drop. This is the second beer I’ve had from Green Beacon and, so far, I am more than impressed. Bring on the next!

Would I buy it again?
Absolutely. But I’d go for the Wayfarer USA first.
