Paddo Pale

Bottled from the heart of the city, Sydney Brewery is dedicated to creating the best craft beers in Australia. Brewed lovingly by hand in small batches, each variant is designed to epitomise the local style, personality and people of the suburbs that make this city great.

Style: Pale ale     ABV: 5%

Tasting notes from the brewer: On first tasting, look for a true citrus and floral ale aroma, but then stand back for a full malt experience in the mouth, followed by a big bitter finish. Our paddo pale is triple hopped with cascade, galaxy and amarillo hop flavours. See, it’s got it all. And it’s all good.

“It’s good to be bitter... usually.”

This has got to be the bitterest pale ale I’ve ever had. And, dare I say it, it may even be too bitter. I love big bitter finishes in IPAs and the like when there are other bold flavours to add complexity to the overall experience but felt the other elements of this brew were a little overshadowed. The citrusy hop flavours that are present are great, I just wish I could taste more of them.

Would I buy it again?
Yeah, but I wouldn’t go looking for it.

“Off the charts bitterness.”

Wowee! That would have to be the bitterest beer I have ever had in my life. The moment this beer hit my tongue the bitterness swarmed every inch of my tongue like ants to honey.

As my bio says ‘I tend to avoid bitter beers’ there is no prizes for guessing how I feel about this one. This is not to say this isn’t a good beer, but I would only recommend it if you like seriously bitter beer.

Would I buy it again?
Much too bitter for me.

“Pale in comparison.”

I’m a big fan of pale ales so when this beer was pulled from the fridge, I was keen. But then I took a swig, and the bitterness arrived... much too soon. It actually made it difficult to enjoy the citrusy hops promised in the tasting notes. That made it hard to enjoy as I prefer a bitter end that lingers long after the beer is finished, rather than mid-sip. If the recipe or brewing process could be slightly altered to push the bitterness back a few seconds, I reckon this brew would step up a notch or two... until then, I’m sorry, but we can’t go on.

Would I buy it again?
No.

“All about the looks”

I’m not entirely sure what it was about the Paddo Pale label but on first sight I remarked that it looked very much like home brew. Upon tasting, it turns out my eyes didn’t deceive me – it also tastes a lot like something I have made previously in a plastic tub.

It’s a stunning looking beer – dark and golden, and the aroma wasn’t at all off-putting, but the flavour wasn’t there for me. It started with an almighty crash – bitterness beyond expectation – but then that faded away into obscurity. No lingering taste, except the faint hint of watered down cough syrup.

I don’t like pale ale and the Paddo Pale doesn’t help the cause.

Would I buy it again?
No.
